Meta's AI Can Talk Dirty. Your Instagram Still Can't.

Meta's AI Can Talk Dirty. Your Instagram Still Can't.

You post a swimsuit photo. A few hours later it's flagged, your account is hidden from anyone who isn't logged in, and you're back in the appeals screen for the third time this month.

Same month, Meta's new AI will happily sext you if you ask.

That's the contrast a lot of adult creators have been passing around since mid-October.

What happened

Muse is Meta's new AI agent. It works like a text thread: you message it, it messages back, and if you give it access it'll help with things like your calendar and email. It's also been sitting near the top of the download charts, helped along by being pushed through Instagram and Facebook.

WIRED's Reece Rogers asked it to sext him. It did, in a lot of detail. Muse only writes text, so there are no images or video involved, but the text didn't hold back.

What creators said

WIRED then talked to adult creators about it, and they weren't impressed.

Vanniall, an OnlyFans creator in New York with over 100,000 followers on Instagram, says her account there is restricted. "There's always some sort of report or appeal that I'm going through with them," she told WIRED. She also spends time chasing deepfakes of herself that she often can't get taken down.

Jiz Lee, who has worked in queer porn and runs an OnlyFans, has had Instagram posts flagged for removal. "I think we're already seeing AI being allowed to do more than humans would get away with," Lee said. Lee also asked a question nobody at Meta has answered yet: what was Muse trained on, and was anyone paid for it?

Tony Genius, an OnlyFans creator who also does adult films, has reportedly gone through seven Instagram accounts in five years.

What Meta said

Meta's position is that these are two different things. A spokesperson told WIRED that a private, one-to-one conversation between an adult and an AI agent, on a platform restricted to people 18 and over, is very different from promoting yourself on social media. Meta had also said earlier that Muse doesn't block legal adult behaviour.

So, officially: Muse is private, Instagram is public, different rules apply. There's been no announcement of anything similar for real performers on Instagram.

Where this leaves creator reach

For most creators, none of this changes much day to day. Instagram is still a place where you find new followers and a place where you can lose an account overnight, sometimes in the same week. Backup accounts are pretty normal at this point.

It's also part of why plenty of creators keep their audience spread across X, Bluesky and Instagram, so one restriction doesn't take everything with it. Collabs feed into that too. Two creators shoot together, tag each other, and both end up in front of people who'd never seen them before, on whichever platforms they each post to.

Where JustCollabs fits

That cross-platform side of collabs is a big part of why JustCollabs exists. It's a place to find creators and photographers to collab with, searchable by city, and every profile is checked by a real person before it goes live.

It won't do anything about Instagram's moderation. Nothing on our side can. It does mean the person you're planning your next shoot with has already been checked.
